Van Dijk first training with Liverpool team-mates

As Liverpool continued their preparations for Friday's clash with Everton, there was a fresh face training among Jurgen Klopp's squad.

Virgil van Dijk, who became the world's most expensive defender when he completed a £75million move from Southampton this month, joined his team-mates for the first time on Wednesday night. The defender could make his debut in the FA Cup third round on Friday. And he appeared in good spirits ahead of the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The defender could make his debut in the FA Cup third round on Friday. And he appeared in good spirits ahead of the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Van Dijk took part in the session alongside the likes of Sadio Mane and Ragnar Klavan after his route from pot-washer to record-breaker was revealed. As a teenager, the 26-year-old made ends meet by washing dishes in his native Breda in Holland.

A decade on, the Dutchman is preparing to make his Liverpool bow. And he got to know his new team-mates better during the session at Melwood on Wednesday night. Alongside Van Dijk, Mane wrapped up against the cold and trained with Klopp's squad, despite his own busy schedule ahead of the derby clash.
